Holiday Enrichment Activities: Charlotte’s Web Movie Screening + Pop Quiz

Charlotte’s Web – I’m sure most of us are familiar with this title and would have read the book or watched the movie at least once.

According to Wikipedia, this is a story of “a livestock pig named Wilbur and his friendship with a barn spider named Charlotte. When Wilbur is in danger of being slaughtered by the farmer, Charlotte writes messages praising Wilbur (such as "Some Pig") in her web in order to persuade the farmer to let him live”. This story revolves around three major themes – death, change and innocence.

Even though the themes seemed too serious for the kids to really comprehend, this movie was chosen with the intention to educate the kids about friendship and the importance of rendering help for one another. Hence, to ensure that the kids get the educational message, we have also created a list of questions as pop quiz (at the same time, this allowed the kids to be more attentive since we reward them with little treats if they answered correctly :p)

Personally, in my own point of view, using a movie to educate the kids on important principles in life will cast a greater impact to the kids. They are able to see the actions of individuals and its impacts (consequences) clearly. Also, movie depicts emotions directly; this allow the kids to better relate the emotions and intended messages with images instead of just words, if they were taught of similar principles using textbook.

According to research done, human are visual learners; coupled with the fact that most kids have short attention span, using movie or video would definitely be more effective in capturing their attention. Hence, using animated objects (i.e. videos/movies) to educate kids not only make learning less mundane, it could also enhance their learning pace.
